Pope Benedict declares Cardinal Newman 'blessed'
Thousands of people at an open-air Mass in Birmingham have witnessed Pope Benedict's beatification of 19th Century theologian Cardinal John Henry Newman.
The ceremony brings Cardinal Newman, an Anglican who converted to Roman Catholicism, one step away from sainthood.
It takes place on the final day of the pontiff's four-day state visit to the UK.
