London Mayor Boris Johnson has been selling the benefits of the newly launched London bike scheme to the world media.

Thousands of bikes are available to hire at docking stations across central London under the new initiative.

Similar schemes operate in other major European cities, including Barcelona, Brussels and Paris.

The bikes would help combat obesity, as well as congestion, the mayor said.

The mayor also defended the involvement of Barclays Bank in the scheme as corporate sponsor.
