Ledger gives new insight into Barnsley mining disaster

A ledger containing details about a mining disaster in Barnsley has been donated to the town's archives.

An explosion at the Oaks colliery in 1847 was later overshadowed by England's worst mining disaster, which followed in 1866.

The newly donated ledger will go on public display today:

Kate Rusby's music festival prepared for rain

This weekend sees the annual Underneath The Stars festival take place at Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley.

The event is organised every year by Barnsley folk singer Kate Rusby and her family.

The weather forecast looks a little unsettled for Saturday and Sunday but Kate says they've taken that into account.

We've made sure that people have got lots of cover. The main concert tent is massive with seats in it. We've planned it so that if it does rain, it doesn't matter."

Knife surrender in South Yorkshire

A knife surrender has begun in South Yorkshire after a 46% rise in knife crime.

Knives can be dropped into four police stations in the county:

  • Barnsley - Churchfield
  • Doncaster - College Road
  • Rotherham - Main Street
  • Sheffield - Snig Hill

However, it is not a knife amnesty as police will still prosecute over knives found to be used in crimes.

Those found guilty of knife crime could face up to 4 years in prison.

Missing Barnsley man could be in Blackpool or Bridlington

He was last seen by his family at around 22:40 last Saturday outside the Revelstoke Hotel in Bridlington.

Police say they are concerned about him and that he has links in the Blackpool and Bridlington areas.

Sheffield Wednesday's game with Sheffield United at Hillsborough has been moved to Sunday 24 September.

The game has been moved and will now be shown on TV, with a 12:30 kick off.

Barnsley's game with Aston Villa has also been selected for TV coverage and has been pushed back to 17:30 on Saturday 12 September.

South Yorkshire devolution: 'We need to look at other potential options'

Sir Steve Houghton has temporarily stood down as the chair of the Sheffield City Region.

The leader of Barnsley council says he made the decision because of delays over the devolution deal.

He says he has seen the original nine authorities that originally signed up now go down to four, with a decision on any deal being deferred until September.

Sir Steve also says he believes it may be better for Barnsley to look at other options away from the South Yorkshire deal:

Concern for missing Barnsley man

South Yorkshire Police are growing concerned for missing Barnsley man Steven Jackson, who was last seen yesterday morning.

50-year-old Mr Jackson, who was last spotted in Wombwell is pictured below:

It's thought he has links to Silkstone, Penistone and Ingbirchworth and anyone with information is asked to contact the force on 101.

Man honoured for helping save woman's life

A man from Barnsley has been honoured for clambering into a crashed car to help save a woman’s life.

Richard Chadburn, from Hoyland, came across a vehicle that was on its side with three people in it.

Police have presented him with a commendation for his actions in helping to save the life of the76-year-old woman by bearing her body weight for 40 minutes until the emergency services arrived.

His action prevented further injury, say police, and they're praising his compassion in helping the woman.

Second life for bikes in Barnsley

A new scheme launches today in Barnsley designed to get children on bikes.

The council has taken old bikes, repaired them and put them in Elsecar Park for families to rent out.

Initially, it will just be in Elsecar but if it's a success then it could rolled out across the borough:

Katherine Brunt reaches 100 England caps

Yesterday was a big day for Barnsley's Katherine Brunt.

Not only did she play a part in helping England beat New Zealand to qualify for the semi finals of the Womens World Cup but that match was also the 100th time she's pulled on a one-day shirt for her country.

As you can imagine her dad Mick is one proud Yorkshire man, as this from the England and Wales Cricket Board shows:
