US, UK and Canada reject UN internet treaty

The US, Canada and UK have refused to sign an international communications treaty at a UN conference in Dubai.

The countries objected to calls for states to have equal rights over the governance of the internet.

Russia, China and Saudi Arabia were among those pushing for the change.

The meeting of the UN's International Telecommunications Union (ITU) was being held to revise a communications treaty last overhauled 24 years ago.

Independent analyst on telecoms and internet Dr Jerry Sanders, explained why the treaty is being proposed.
