Kensington Palace

In response to the demands from the public to lengthen the route of the funeral procession, the sombre cortege is to set out from Kensington Palace, Diana's former home. Her coffin has lain for one night in the private apartment,which she was allowed to keep after divorcing Prince Charles. Thousands of bouquets have been laid at the gates of the palace, originally a Jacobean mansion and a favourite residence of William III and his wife Queen Mary. Queen Victoria was born here in 1819 and only left after she became sovereign and moved to Buckingham Palace in 1837.
