Science close up - Wellcome Images 2014

From the sharp and potentially painful points on a kidney stone, to a head louse egg firmly glued to a hair - the annual Wellcome Image Awards celebrate the best in science imaging talent and techniques. Take a close-up look at some of the winning images.

For a limited time the winning images will be on public display at Glasgow Science Centre - Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester - Techniquest in Cardiff - W5 in Belfast - Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge - and in the window of the Wellcome Trust in London.

The BBC's medical editor Fergus Walsh was one of the judges in the Wellcome Images competition.
