Cumbria's pearl mussels at risk of being wiped out

30 August 2013 Last updated at 07:43 BST

Cumbria's pearl mussels, one of Europe's largest mussel populations, could be at risk of being wiped out because of demand on the natural water supply.

The freshwater pearl mussels are as endangered as the giant panda - but consumer needs, along with severe weather patterns, are putting them at risk.

Fiona Trott reports.
