Big Picture: Galaxy smash-up gets an X-ray

Chandra/Hubble composite image of NGC 6240

NGC 6240 is the site of two spiral galaxies, each about the same size as our Milky Way, slowly careening into one another. This image combines new data from the Chandra X-ray telescope and a Hubble image in a bid to study the elements created in a "baby boom" of stars that has accompanied the collision.
