The iridescence of the aptly named diamond weevil has been laid bare in a Royal Society journal this week. Dutch and German researchers found that each pit (top centre) is lined with scales (top right) with a structure like that of diamond. Electron micrographs (bottom centre) bear out this "photonic crystal" structure (bottom right).
Warming extremes 'not as likely'
Global temperature rises will be slower in the coming decades say researchers but the long term picture is consistent.
