Diamond weevil's apt name explained
The iridescence of the aptly named diamond weevil has been laid bare in a Royal Society journal this week. Dutch and German researchers found that each pit (top centre) is lined with scales (top right) with a structure like that of diamond. Electron micrographs (bottom centre) bear out this "photonic crystal" structure (bottom right).
