Strong solar storms have given people in Scotland , Northern Ireland and northern England an impressive view of the Northern Lights over the past few nights.

Solar scientist Dr Lucie Green explained how a flare from the storm interacted with the Earth's magnetic field to produce the spectacle.

While beautiful, the charged particles can cause disruption to satellites and electrical networks.
