1977: Test shuttle makes first free flight
In August 1977 the first free flight of Nasa's prototype shuttle, the Enterprise, took place over the California desert.
The ship - named after the famous Star Trek vessel - was carried to high altitude on a modified Boeing 747 before being released to glide back to Earth.
