Livestock farming 'reduces human life by six months'

Nitrogen pollution from farms, vehicles and industry is costing the EU up to £280bn a year - and could even reduce the lifespan of Europeans, according to a report.

Nitrogen is the most common element in the Earth's atmosphere and is usually harmless, but the reactive form contributes to air pollution and has a part in climate change.

Livestock farming is one of the biggest culprits, and the study by 200 European experts says the substance could shorten the life of the average EU resident by six months.
