Calls for 'Ask for Angela' safety campaign in Manchester
A safety campaign in which people who are feeling unsafe on a date can ask for help using a code-word should be introduced in Manchester, an MP has said.
John Leech, former Liberal Democrat MP for Withington and now Disbury West councillor, said Ask For Angela could "dramatically increase the safety of people in Manchester" and should be "as soon as is humanly possible".
Ask For Angela which is a play on the word (guardian) angel, was the brainchild of Lincolnshire County Council and has been rolled out in other areas.
It encourages people to discreetly ask for help by going to the bar and "Ask for Angela" - a phrase aimed at alerting bar staff to the cry for help so they can help defuse the situation.
Manchester City Council is yet to comment.
