One of two officials shot at a school in the state of Nebraska by a student who then killed himself has died, police say.

The gunman, identified as 17-year-old Robert Butler, was found dead in his car about a mile away a short time after the shooting, Omaha police said.

Vicki Kaspar, vice principal of Millard South High School, died hours after she was shot. Principal Curtis Case was said to be in a stable condition.

No other students were injured.

Police said Butler, identified as the son of a police detective, was in his last year of high school and had transferred to the school about two months ago.

The school was locked down, and students were released in groups to a nearby church.

Police declined to speculate about Butler's motives.

On a Facebook page viewed by the Associated Press, Butler apparently ranted that people would hear about "evil" things he had done and said the school had driven him to violence.
