A maternity unit in Somerset has become the first in the region to receive an international award for patient care.

The Baby Friendly Award has been given to Yeovil District Hospital for its work in supporting and encouraging mothers to breast feed their babies.

Sue Ashmore, from Unicef, said: "Mothers and babies at Yeovil can be confident they will receive the highest standard of care."

The awards programme was set up by the World Health Organisation and Unicef.

Neil Tomlin, from the hospital, said: "We are absolutely delighted to have been given this award as we are only one of a few maternity units in the South West to have been recognised in this way."

In order to receive the award, the hospital was assessed by a Unicef team to check if best practice standards were in place.
