Fire and police rescue the woman from the River Trent

A woman is in a stable condition in hospital after the car she was driving plunged into the River Trent.

Police were called to the Victoria Embankment, near Trent Bridge in the Meadows, shortly before 20:15 GMT on Sunday.

The 29-year-old driver managed to escape from the car and was helped across the water by a police officer.

The woman was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre suffering from severe shock and hypothermia.

Station manager Simon Glew, from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, said: "When our first appliances arrived the vehicle was fully submerged and police had already carried out a rescue of one female.

"Our crews carried out a search to check no-one else was in the car for half an hour and then recovered the vehicle from the river."
