Witness: The end of British rule in India

22 July 2014 Last updated at 21:28 BST

British rule of India ended in 1947 after nearly 100 years.

Until that moment, a small number of Britons administered large swathes of the country and led a privileged life.

Anne Wright was the daughter of a senior official in the Indian Civil Service and grew up during the dying days of British rule.

Witness is a World Service radio programme of the stories of our times told by the people who were there.

Produced by Lucy Burns and Directed by Claire Tailyour
