Christine Jorgensen: The GI who had a sex change
Sixty years ago, in 1952, news broke that a former American soldier, George Jorgensen, had successfully undergone gender reassignment surgery.
George was transformed into the glamorous Christine - who went on to become a celebrity in her own right, starring in theatre, films and her own show.
To mark the anniversary, Teit Ritzau, a Danish documentary maker, has been speaking to Witness on BBC World Service.
The programme features extracts from an interview that Christine Jorgensen gave to the BBC programme Line Up in 1970.
