How much masculinity matters in presidential politics

When Americans across the country vote on 6 November, they will not be selecting a candidate based on political merit alone.

They will be choosing the candidate they believe to be the most successful embodiment of American masculinity, says author Jackson Katz in his new book Leading Men: Presidential Campaigns and the Politics of Manhood.

Katz believes that being a 'real man' is as important to winning the keys to the White House as is a successful campaign.

In an interview with the BBC, Katz says every president has his own brand of masculinity - Ronald Reagan was as comfortable on the ranch as Barack Obama is on the basketball court.

But not every candidate masters the art of Presidential masculinity.
