Test match 'to bring in £10m'

The Test match at Trent Bridge could see Nottinghamshire's economy benefit by an estimated £10m.

Thousands of cricket fans are in town to see England take on South Africa.

Some 60,000 tickets have been sold for the first four days and nearly every one of Nottingham's 4,371 hotel rooms is full.

It all adds up to a big boost for the ground and dozens of local businesses.

Student killer had breached bail 24 times

Bail breaches by a man from Derby who killed a student in Leeds six years ago were handled in a "fundamentally flawed" manner, an IPCC report has found.

Jagdip Randhawa, 19, (pictured), from Hounslow, hit his head on a pavement after he was punched by boxer Clifton Ty Mitchell in Leeds in 2011.

He died in hospital five days later.

Mitchell, now 26, from Derby, was convicted of manslaughter and jailed for seven years in 2012.

He'd breached bail conditions for a previous violent offence 24 times in the preceding five months but no action was taken.

The procedure in place at the time of the incident was fundamentally flawed and was not fit for the control of persons deemed by the court system to require active monitoring. This process was in my opinion so flawed that none of the staff operating under it appeared to recognise the ongoing issues with this one individual and see the obvious opportunities missed."

Derbyshire Police has said procedures have since been reviewed and were now more robust.

Transport projects need HS2 money now, says Dennis Skinner

There should be a "reassessment" of the "pie in the sky" plans for the HS2 high-speed rail link, according to Bolsover MP Dennis Skinner.

Mr Skinner said: "Why doesn't the Secretary of State for Transport tell his friends that some of these so-called projects are pie in the sky from the government that's already committed to spending more than £80bn on the HS2.

"Why doesn't he get real and understand there should be a reassessment of HS2... believe me there are a lot of people on both sides of this House are fed up of the idea of spending money in the far distant future for HS2 when there's all these projects on the order paper today where they want action?"

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said he "very surprised" that Mr Skinner was opposed to a scheme that would improve rail capacity in the north of England.

The Birmingham to Leeds leg of HS2 is expected to pass through towns including Long Eaton and Sandiacre.

Thank you tea for community police officers

Two community police officers were invited to afternoon tea by the Sheriff of Nottingham, councillor Glyn Jenkins to thank them for their service.

CPO Flora has been with the Hyson Green beat team since 2008 but is leaving to take up a new job with Derby City Council.

Flowers and a card, signed by local residents were also handed to CPO Flora, who is leaving the Hyson Green policing team after nine years.

Weather: Dry and bright evening ahead

It will be a bright evening ahead with some showers but it will generally feel mild with temperatures reaching 14C (57F).

There will be some clouds which will thicken during the night but it should remain largely dry.

Tomorrow will see some light drizzle in the morning but with sunny spells later in the day.

Temperatures will reach highs of 19C (66F).

Airport sees a hike in passengers

This summer is set to be the busiest on record at East Midlands Airport.

In the last 12 months, 4.7 million people used it and numbers will continue to rise, according to their website.

During May alone there was a 4% rise in passengers compared to the previous year.

Jack Kelly, from the airport said: "If you look at how people are going to get to the airport, as we plan to double our passengers over the next 10 to 15 years, we are going to have to get people here by some other way than road.

"We are desperate for the government to make big improvements to East Midlands parkway with that we will put our money where our mouth is and put £2.5m into improving connections to the airport from that facility."

Man used false name to store illegal cigarettes

A man, who used a false name to store and sell thousands of pounds worth of illegal cigarettes, has been been sentenced.

Philip Tatham, 53, of Alfreton Road, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, used another name to rent a storage unit to hold 198,000 illegal cigarettes and 125kgs of hand rolling tobacco, worth £74,989.16 in unpaid duty.

He was sentenced to 18 months suspended for two years at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday.

Following an investigation, a Stanley knife with Tatham’s DNA on it was found, at the storage unit in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

He admitted renting the unit but claimed he sub-let it to a third party who must have owned the cigarettes.

Tatham was charged with storing cigarettes and keeping rolling tobacco with intent to defraud.

Murder accused claims teen girl's strangle death was accident

A man accused of murdering a 16-year-old girl by strangling her in his bedroom has told a court he did not intend to kill her.

James Morton, 24, denies murdering Hannah Pearson after taking her back to his home in Newark.

Mr Morton told the court Miss Pearson's death was an accident caused by him strangling her as they began to get intimate, having seen it in a film a few weeks earlier and being curious to try it.

Asked by his defence counsel whether he intended to harm Miss Pearson, he replied "not at all".

He gave the same response when asked whether it was his intention to kill her and he said there was no reason he would have wanted her dead.

Stop-smoking project facing the axe

A scheme which gave new Derbyshire mums £750 if they stopped smoking looks set to be scrapped.

Derbyshire County Council will make a decision next week.

Man jailed for shooting bouncer

A man who deliberately shot a doorman in the leg after he was kicked out of a nightclub has been jailed for 20 years.

Theodore Antonio Paget, 29, was told to leave Sub8ten, in Leicester, but returned soon after on 8 May 2016.

Leicester Crown Court heard he pulled a gun on one doorman, then shot and injured another who intervened.

Paget, of no fixed address, was found guilty by a jury of wounding with intent after admitting unlawfully wounding.

Man critically ill after Alvaston assault

A man is in a critical condition following an alleged assault in Alvaston.

Police said the 34-year-old was reportedly attacked in Cropton Close on Friday afternoon.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and remanded in custody.

Two other men, aged 18 and 20, were questioned about the incident but have been released while investigations continue.

Loughborough University rapist has sentence increased

A rapist who targeted students at Loughborough University has had his prison sentence increased.

On three separate occasions during a six-week period in 2010, Ibrahim Elamin lay in wait and attacked male students as they walked home from nights out.

The 35-year-old was jailed for seven years and eight months at Leicester Crown Court in May.

However, Elamin's sentence has been increased to 11 years and three months after the Court of Appeal agreed with the Solicitor General Robert Buckland that the original sentence was unduly lenient.

Speaking after the hearing, Mr Buckland said: "These were premeditated attacks, preying on young men on their way home. Young people should be able to enjoy a night out and walk home without fear.

"I felt the original sentence did not accurately reflect the seriousness of this offending and I am pleased that the Court of Appeal agreed with me."

Derby North MP Williamson wants to halt library shake-up

Labour's Derby North MP Chris Williamson has called on Derby City Council to look at alternatives to its community-run libraries plan.

The Labour authority's cabinet last night approved plans to hand 10 of the city's 15 libraries to volunteers as part of a shake-up of the service aimed at saving £700,000 a year.

'Knife arrests' at Derby school

Pupils at Da Vinci Academy in Derby witnessed fellow students being arrested for trying to carry in weapons this morning.

However, the arrests were not actually real - they were part of an elaborate scenario dreamt up by students - and supported by the emergency services - to drive home a hard-hitting message on the dangers of carrying knives.

'Increase in hate crime reports'

Reports of hate crime in Nottingham have increased by 47% since the Brexit vote and the recent terror attacks, say police.

Nottinghamshire Police said 1,418 hate crimes were reported between June 2016 and May 2017, but it put the increase down to people being more confident about coming forward.

Victims of hate crime held a meeting at the Karimia Centre in Nottingham to speak about their experiences.

Teenage cyclist 'serious but stable' after Little Eaton crash

A 13-year-old boy is in hospital in a “serious but stable condition” after he was hit by a car while on his bike.

Paramedics, an air ambulance and police officers were all called to Alfreton Road in Little Eaton at about 18:00 yesterday and the teenager was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre, in Nottingham.

The road was closed following the crash and re-opened at about 21:45.

Ilkeston Railway Station officially opened

Ilkeston Railway Station was officially opened today.

Trains began running again in April - for the first time in 50 years - but a special event was organised by East Midlands Trains this afternoon.

Coalville regeneration allocated £777,000

Three significant projects in Coalville will benefit from £777,000, as part of the regeneration of the town.

North West Leicestershire District Council said this means they have invested a total of £3m in the town's regeneration between 2015 and 2019.

The first project will see £577,000 used to redesign Marlborough Square to make it easier for pedestrians to use and reduce the number of vehicles, including buses and taxis.

A total of £25,000 will be used to improve the Memorial Square by creating a space for people-held events or the display of commemorative artwork.

Out of the total budget, £175,000 will be used on improving traffic on Ashby Road and investing in Snibston Country Park.

Work includes straightening the carriageway and planting trees to create an attractive route into the town centre.

A man from Nottingham has gone missing in Leeds after a night out with a friend.

West Yorkshire Police

Jeremy Lancaster, 24 from Sherwood, had gone to a gig in the city but hasn't been seen since late last night.

He was last seen wearing a grey t-shirt with "Abandoned Ship" written on it.

Officers say they are growing increasingly concerned for his welfare and if anyone knows where he might be to get in touch urgently.

Sports Direct buys quarter stake in Game

Mike Ashley's Sports Direct has bought a quarter stake in struggling computer games retailer Game Digital.

Game said Shirebrook-based Sports Direct had bought 44 million shares, a 25.75% stake, and said it looked forward to "working collaboratively" with the company.

Mr Ashley, currently involved in a court dispute with an investment banker, already has stakes in Debenhams, French Connection and Findel.

His investment in Game comes a month after the company issued a profit warning, blaming poor supplies of the Nintendo Switch console.

Owen Jenkins: Bikers to wear purple

Bikers taking part in a tribute ride for a 12-year-old who drowned on Monday have been told to wear purple.

The ride's organisers, Nottz Bikerz, said the colour was Owen Jenkins' favourite.

The ride will start at the Beekeeper Pub in Beeston on 23 July and finish at Beeston Weir, close to where Owen went into the water.

It is thought he was helping a friend who had fallen into the weir.

Remarkable video footage has been released showing a telehandler being used to rip a cash machine from the front of a building society in Ashby.

The brazen smash-and-grab happened in Market Street at about 03:00 on Monday and police believe an Audi and a pick-up truck were also involved.

Leicestershire Police said: “The Bobcat was used to ram the front of the building in order for the suspects to remove the cash machine which caused a significant amount of disruption.

“We have released the CCTV footage which clearly shows three vehicles in the area and the incident itself taking place."

Hot weather has caused early rape seed harvest

While many of us enjoy the hot weather, it has affected the harvesting of barley across the East Midlands.

Farmers have said the dry winter and recent heat has led to an early rape seed harvest.

The unpredictability of our seasons makes it difficult for growers to plan ahead, so the University of Nottingham is looking at how to make crops more climate resistant.

Joe Stanley, who runs a farm near Coalville, said: "It is becoming increasingly unpredictable. This year's harvest was at least a fortnight early due to the weather we had in June".

Government defends record on minority ethnic teachers in Leicester

This table highlights the large discrepancy between the proportion of black and minority ethnic (BME) pupils (the red line) and teachers (the orange line) in Leicester.

The figures, obtained by the BBC, show 70% of pupils in the city's schools are BME, but the figure is less than 30% for teachers.

The Department for Education has defended its record on BME recruitment.

A spokesman said: "There has been a steady increase in the proportion of minority ethnic groups starting teacher training and in the teaching profession in recent years.

"We also provide a range of support to teachers from black and ethnic minority backgrounds such as the Leadership, Equality and Diversity Fund.

"This fund supports schools to increase the representation of BME teachers in senior leadership roles as well as providing coaching and mentoring for BME teachers."

Collapsed sewer shuts Spondon road for ten days

A road in Derby will be closed for more than a week after a sewer collapsed.

Severn Trent said it would be a "big difficult job" to repair the "very deep" sewer beneath Sancroft Road in Spondon and it was expected to take about 10 days.

The firm has put a diversion in place but said residents would still be able to access their properties.

Schoolgirl 'threatened by limping stranger'

A 12-year-old girl from Derbyshire has told police she was approached yesterday by a limping white-haired man who asked her to go with him and then threatened her .

She said she encountered the man, who was in his 50s or 60s and had a large belly, while walking along Dronfield Road in Eckington at about 09:10.

The girl ran away and now police are trying to trace the man. Call 101 if you can help.
