Learning to walk again in Afghanistan
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Orthopaedic Centre in Helmand is at the heart of Afghanistan's war. Patients used to have to travel hundreds of miles along dangerous roads to reach other centres. But now they can access treatment more easily. Every day civilians arrive to be fitted with prosthetic limbs and learn how to walk again.
The workers in the centre are all disabled themselves, and the philosophy behind the centre is as much about social integration as physical rehabilitation. Sidiqullah, who lost his legs in an improvised explosive device explosion four years ago, now works at the centre. Here he tells his story.
