Long-term addicts 'should be prescribed heroin'

18 June 2014 Last updated at 12:48 BST

Medical heroin should be prescribed to long-term addicts to prevent them causing harm to themselves and others, a German doctor has said.

Dr Thomas Peschel, who runs one of six residential rehabilitation centres in Germany, said the process also helped patients find work and improved their mental health.

Reporter Johnny I'Anson visited Dr Peschel's Patrida clinic in Berlin for BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire programme.

He spoke to heroin addicts Mattias and Chris, who explained how the scheme prevented them from using street bought drugs.
