Jeremy Hunt: drug licensing 'takes too long'

14 March 2014 Last updated at 12:23 GMT

The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said that the drug licensing process "takes too long."

Mr Hunt said a new scheme allowing severely ill people to trial safe but unlicensed drugs would speed up proceedings.

The Early Access to Medicine scheme is expected to be launched in April and will be overseen by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.

Mr Hunt told BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire "If there's a way that we can safely make a drug available earlier to people in great need... then I think it's right to streamline procedures."
