Richard III production 'to shower audience in fake blood'

4 July 2014 Last updated at 11:01 BST

A new production of Shakespeare's Richard III, starring Martin Freeman, is to cover the front two rows of audience in fake blood to add to the "immersive experience" felt by theatregoers, its director Jamie Lloyd has said.

But The Independent's arts editor David Lister told the show that its incorporation detracts from the power of Shakespeare's writing and the performance of the actors.

He added: "It's the audiences imagination that counts".
