Actor Jake Gyllenhaal will make his Broadway debut later this year in hit play Constellations by British playwright Nick Payne.

The Brokeback Mountain star begins previews of the two-hander in December at the Samuel J Friedman Theatre.

A London production starring Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins transferred from the Royal Court to the West End in 2012.

Gyllenhaal will take on Spall's role, a beekeeper called Roland who falls for quantum physicist Marianne.

The alternative romance features 100 different scenes in just 65 minutes and presents several permutations of the couples relationship, exploring a theory known as multiverse.

In some scenarios, the couple lives happily together while in others they do not even make it to a first kiss.

Gyllenhaal has already worked with Payne, starring in a 2012 off-Broadway production of If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet.

That play's director, Michael Longhurst, is also at the helm of Constellations, according to an announcement by The Manhattan Theatre Club.

Gyllenhaal also appeared on the London stage in 2002, in a revival of Kenneth Lonergan's This Is Our Youth.
