Maxine Peake: New series of The Village has 'more joy'

2 June 2014 Last updated at 16:20 BST

The next series of historical BBC drama The Village will be "a little bit lighter", actress Maxine Peake has claimed.

The show, set in a Derbyshire village during WWI, was accused of being too "bleak" by some viewers.

However, Peake insisted that with the next series focusing on the roaring twenties, naturally there would be "a little bit more joy."

She told BBC Radio 5 live's Richard Bacon: "Life was bleak in those villages, trying to work a farm in those conditions... But we're in the 1920s now."
