Emmerdale's Charlie Hardwick tackles HIV discrimination

7 May 2014 Last updated at 16:16 BST

Actress Charlie Hardwick, who plays a character with HIV on Emmerdale, says she is using her position to debunk the myths surrounding HIV.

Her character on the soap, Val Pollard, became HIV positive after a short-lived affair in Portugal.

Despite not having the condition in reality, Hardwick was recently the target of an HIV related joke by a member of the public, prompting her to educate him about the condition.

She told BBC Radio 5 live's Richard Bacon: "This is our chance to say things directly, like a broadcast through the telly to the audience, you don't get it like this... and please don't shun people."
