The director of new BBC period drama Jamaica Inn has admitted there was ''a sound issue'' with the programme, which sparked more than 100 complaints by viewers.
Philippa Lowthorpe told BBC Radio 5 live's Richard Bacon the low sound levels could not be altered during transmission, but had been rectified since.
Some viewers said they had to use subtitles to understand the "mumbling".
She added she was ''sad'' if the sound problems had disturbed people's enjoyment.
