Singer Sam Smith has scored his first solo number one in the UK singles chart with Money On My Mind.

The BBC's Sound of 2014 and Brits Critics' Choice winner comfortably took the top spot, selling 108,000 copies of the track.

It follows his guest vocal on Naughty Boy's La La La, which reached number one last May.

"It feels amazing. Having my own song at number one is just absolutely incredible," the 21-year-old said.

The "Brit Awards effect" could be seen in both the singles and album chart following Wednesday's ceremony.

Pharrell Williams' feel-good track Happy - which he performed in a medley at the end of the show - climbed one position back up to number two after 14 weeks on the chart.

A live recording of Pompeii/Waiting All Night, a collaboration performed by Bastille, Rudimental and Ella Eyre on the night, was also a new entry at 21, according to the Official Charts Company.

The top five album chart comprised four Brit award winners.

Bastille - who won British breakthrough act - climbed nine places to return to the top spot, with best British group Arctic Monkeys at two with AM, which was named album of the year.

Despite losing out on the latter award, Disclosure's debut record Settle still benefited from a Brits push, rising from 32 to number three.

Best female solo artist Ellie Goulding was at four with Halcyon, while best British single winners Rudimental were at five - up from 19 last week - with their debut, Home.
