Robert Redford: Being a sex symbol hindered my career

3 December 2013 Last updated at 11:19 GMT

In his latest film, All Is Lost, Robert Redford stars as a sailor alone at sea and is the sole actor.

He tells BBC Newsnight about how, even at the age of 77, he still doesn't like to watch himself on screen.

He also says he found being labelled a sex symbol in his younger days a "bit of a cage that was hard to get out of" for his career.

In his only UK television interview, he spoke to the film critic Tom Shone.
