Doctor Who at 50: Designing the new Tardis

During the 50 years of Doctor Who, the Tardis the Doctor uses to travel through time has had several different looks.

The most recent change to the decor was revealed in the 2012 Christmas special, The Snowmen.

But why the need for change, and what goes into designing a new Tardis?

The series production designer Michael Pickwoad told BBC News where he got his inspiration for the new look, and showed some of the early designs and models he made during the process.
