Ryan Gosling has been fighting on screen and off for his new movie Only God Forgives.

He plays a violent drug dealer in the film which divided critics when it was first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Both Ryan and director Nicolas Winding Refn have defended the film, which was financed after the success of their first collaboration; Drive.

Also quick to stand up for the movie is Kristen Scott Thomas, who plays Ryan's crime boss mum in the drama.
