US country star Randy Travis has been admitted to hospital with a heart condition caused by a virus.

Travis, who spent the night in a Dallas hospital, is in a critical state according to his publicist.

The singer began his career in the mid-1980s and has won several Grammys and Country Music Association awards.

The 54-year-old, who has battled legal and health issues in recent years, pleaded guilty to drink driving in January.

Travis was found 'drunk and naked' after crashing his car in Texas where he lives.

Since the incident, he has made several high-profile appearances including a performance at country star George Jones's funeral in May.

In June, Travis performed a concert in Nashville, telling his fans that he had finished recording an album of country classics.

The Grammy-award winner is best-known for his songs Forever and Ever, Amen, Diggin' Up Bones and Deeper Than the Holler.
