On 6 June, the world-famous Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg will be broadcasting a performance of Tchaikovsky's ballet "Swan Lake" live and in 3D to hundreds of cinemas in 60 countries internationally.

It is the first time a ballet has been broadcast live in 3D.

The production will be filmed by the Hollywood director James Cameron and the production will be conducted by the conductor Valery Gergiev.

Talking to Today presenter James Naughtie, Mr Gergiev spoke about the 3D ballet and today as the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner.

"3D ballet makes it even more spectacular than anything that we did before," he explained.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 22 May 2013.
