Les Miserables was 'my first musical'
Four films dominate the shortlists for this year's British Academy Film Awards, with the US civil war drama Lincoln leading the group.
The musical adaptation Les Miserables follows closely behind, nominated for nine awards.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4's The World at One, director Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar for The King's Speech, told Martha Kearney "everyone put their heart and soul into this".
"You are creating an alternative reality where people communicate though song, and if it's not convincing then all is lost."
The film opens in the UK at the end of the week.
