Sir Roger Moore has said he believes Daniel Craig is the best actor to have played James Bond.

The 84-year-old, who played the British spy in seven films between 1973 and 1985, praised Craig's performances in his new book, Bond on Bond.

"I loved Casino Royale and Daniel Craig. He is a wonderful actor, certainly the best actor to play Bond," he said.

He added he thought the 44-year-old had "the best build of any Bond".

Recalling his years as 007, the veteran actor said: "Back then I could leap out of a chair without fear of my knees cracking.

"[I] could chew a toffee without fear of losing a tooth; could admire my flowing locks and my bronzed, slim torso.

"With a twitch of the old eyebrow I set pulses racing across the world, they say. These days it's my pacemaker that keeps my pulse racing."

Craig's third Bond film, Skyfall, is due for release in the UK on 26 October.

A new trailer for the movie was unveiled last month, showing Bond being "killed" in action and his boss M typing up his obituary.

It also gave fans the first glimpse of Bond villain Silva - played by Oscar winner Javier Bardem - in action.

I always liked Roger Moore as Bond. He got the role after "the Persuaders" and I think some of his films have elements of that but he was never in the same hard league as Connery who was the best Bond. Pierce Brosnan did a reasonable job but I can't take to Daniel Craig he has the personality of a plank of wood.

I thought Basildon was the best.

I never thought anyone would play Bond better than Connery and I was very sceptical when I first heard Craig was to play him, but all doubts faded in the first few seconds of Casino Royale which I now consider to be the definitive Bond film and Daniel Craig the definitive James Bond.

Roger's comments have the self deprecating charm of the English gent that was the Band he portrayed. A spoonful of that would go some way to making DC's Bond perfect. Perhaps, as he relaxes into the part we will see a touch of the unselfconscious, confident but, restrained swagger that goes with a commander in HM's service.

NOTE: Moore has not stated that he thinks Craig is the BEST Bond, simply the BEST ACTOR to have played Bond.

And I agree, I think Craig has the best acting ability by a decent margin.

When it comes to the 'best Bond' though, I honestly don't think there is one. Bond continues to change and evolve which is why it is such a successful ongoing franchise. Every single Bond actor has contributed.

Yes Craig is good, but Bond is supposed to be a Commander in the Royal Navy and Craig Bond character looks like a builder. Maybe this was intentional by the producers, so that the masses could better identify with the character, but this new Bond has none of the suave or sophistication depicted by Flemming.

I have watched the Bond films from the start (and I mean when they were first released!) but I stopped after the first Craig one. The humour of Connery, Moore and Brosnan disappeared (I ignore the "lesser" Bonds) and it became nothing more than a modern action film. Craig does not have the "class" of Bond. He's a working class hero but not Bond!

Oh Roger! You're too modest...go on, say you were the best...because you were.

& Sean, you nearly drew with him!

    @167 Davey Bones.

Also if you remember the movie called Valkyrie.
It was about the plot to assassinate Hitler. All the actors in this movie didn't speak with a German accent. They just spoke as they do in real life and it didn't stop anyone from enjoying the movie. The choice of the actors accent is entirely up to the movie maker. Nothing to do with an actor not being able to do an accent.

    @167 Davey Bones.

Sean Connery is a great actor.
If he has a Scottish accent in most movies it is because the movie makers want him to perform with one. He could have done an English accent as Bond or Irish in Untouchables or even a Russian accent in Red October. But the fact is his natural accent was more appealing and sexy than the others. Women go weak at the knees on hearing his real accent.

Dalton and Craig portray a darker bond, I personally enjoy these films the most.

Moore and Brosnan portray a witty bond with Moore taking the award for "Cheesiest Lines Ever" with a nomination for "Wait, isn't that racist?".

Connery takes the award for best bond simply because he bridges the gap between action, wit and a dark nature.

    Lazenby was awful.

The interesting thing nobody seem's to have mentioned, is all of the actors who have played Bond. Have appeared in one Bond film that could be regarded as a "Bond Classic."
    Connery. From Russia with love.
    Lazenby. OHMSS.
Moore. The Spy Who Loved me.
    Dalton. Licence To Kill.
    Brosnan. Goldeneye.
    Craig. Casino Royale.

I like Daniel Craig, but recently he looks like Norman Wisdom... my preference is Pierce Brosnan, or Sean Connery, Roger Moore looked good but too many cheesy lines.

I agree with Sir Roger, The young Craig lad is dynamic and I grew up with Bond, both the books and the movies. Every woman in our office went WOW over Daniel in Casino Royale (and a few old duffers like myself went WOW over Eva Green) Bring on Sky fall, long may Mr Bond reign.

I was never really old enough for James Bond until Casino Royale came out, so that was my first Bond film. I have watched several others, but CS is still my favourite - I think the others are slightly cheesy or cringeworthy by comparison whereas Craig's Bond is more realistic, plus the writing is brilliant. Quantum was okay, but it could never have even come close to beating Casino's brilliance.

You have to do your research my friend, bond is actually half scottish half swiss. So connery is half fitting of the role already.

Very magnanimous of Sir Roger to be so praising of Craig.
I believe he's right because Craig brings a more cold, steely, devoid-of-emotion assassin's edge to the part of Bond that has never quite been present in the others.
I'm thoroughly looking forward to Skyfall.

As a kid (I'm 40 now) Bond was Connery and Moore. Both were amazing Bonds' I loved all the space ones, so moonraker was up there!

As an adult Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were 'OK'.

Mr Craig has been the face of the latest reboot and been much more gritty.

As an avid Bond fan I still haven't been recaptured as much as the Aston Martin DB5 and Lotus Elan and space shuttle toys I owned

@101 I disagree with you on this, have you read the books? Bond is rogue and far from suave with almost every vice a man could have. I seem to remember one of the last lines in casino royale is "the b*tch is dead". not so sophisticated in my opinion.

of course there is the other question..

is it coincidence the better the film.. the better to title song?

maybe its just me but my fav bond films also have my fav theme songs

looks like skyfall will go to adele & rightly so seeing as she was missing from the jubilee & olympics celebrations, great voice for a big bond tune so by my logic it should be great film ;).

    looking forward to it ;-)
