Terms of Endearment star Debra Winger is to make her Broadway debut later this year in a new play by David Mamet.

Winger will star opposite Patti LuPone in The Anarchist, which will begin previews in November at a New York theatre, yet to be announced.

Mamet will direct the play, a two-woman drama set in a female penitentiary.

Winger, whose other well-known films include An Officer and a Gentleman and Shadowlands, is replacing actress Laurie Metcalf in the production.

Metcalf, currently starring in Long Day's Journey Into Night in London, has withdrawn due to a scheduling conflict.

Winger, who was Oscar-nominated three times between 1982 and 1993, took a break from acting in the 1990s.

In recent years she has returned to the limelight, with roles in 2008 film Rachel Getting Married and HBO drama In Treatment.

The Anarchist tells of a long-term inmate with ties to a violent political organisation who pleads for clemency from her prison's warden.

Winger will play warden Ann, while LuPone, a two-time Tony award winner, will play prisoner Cathy.

Mamet, 64, is a prolific playwright and screenwriter best known for such plays as American Buffalo, Oleanna and Glengarry Glen Ross.

According to its producers, his new piece will tackle such issues as "politics, money, religion and sex".
