A private funeral has been held for Monkees singer Davy Jones near his home in Florida, his publicist has said.

Family including his wife and daughters were there, Helen Kensick told Reuters. She said his body would be cremated and his ashes returned to Manchester.

Next week, a public memorial service will be held in the home city of the star, who died aged 66 last week.

Bandmate Micky Dolenz had said The Monkees were unlikely to go because the family wanted a "very low-key" service.

"And you can imagine as soon as one, or two, or any of us were to show up, it would very quickly be degraded," he told Billboard.

Jones's publicist said there may be another public service in either Los Angeles or New York.

Last week, the singer's eldest sister, Hazel Wilkinson, told BBC Radio Lancashire that Jones "was always playing the monkey right from being born".

"He was the youngest member of the family, he was fit and there didn't seem to be anything wrong with him," she said.
