Leadership role for The National Archives

The National Archives will take charge of the UK's archive sector following the winding up of the Museums, Libraries and Archives council (MLA).

Culture Minister Ed Vaizey said the National Archives was "perfectly placed" to lead and support the sector.

More then 2,000 public and private bodies hold accessible archives.

The announcement comes despite a recent call from the Culture, Media and Sport Committee to review the decision to axe the MLA as part of cuts.

Public access

Mr Vaizey said the National Archives would "act as an advocate" as well as "strengthening and reinforcing our network of archive provision".

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said the National Archives would help universities, local authorities and other institutions to improve public access, including putting documents online.

The Arts Council England has been asked to take on overall control of the MLA's remit to promote improvement and innovation in the area of museums, libraries and archives.

Key responsibilities will transfer to the council on 1 October.

Last month, MPs in the Culture, Media and Sport Committee urged the government to review its decision again in 2012 saying the new set-up would "not be as effective".
