Olympic medallist James Cracknell is expected home later this week, after recovering from a skull fracture in a bike accident in the US.

Cracknell, 38, suffered bruising to his brain after a truck hit his bike. He was flown back to the UK and has been recovering in a London hospital.

His wife Beverley Turner said her husband's "drive and determination" had helped with his recovery.

Cracknell had been in the US filming for the Discovery channel.

The star was shooting a new series called Cracknell's Race Across America, in which he was to attempt running, cycling and rowing across the US in 18 days.

However, the accident was not captured on film.

Turner said the "biggest challenge" ahead of them was getting her husband back to work.

"Rest and recuperation are strange concepts to such an active man," she said.

"But he is looking forward to being home with the children. Both James and I would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support throughout this difficult process."
