Are parents being left out of the maths equation?

Primary schools in England need to do more to help pupils struggling with maths, says Ofsted. But have new teaching methods left parents out in the cold and unable to help?

There may be nothing as certain as a number, but the way children are taught to handle them has changed.

As any parent of a primary age child knows, pupils come home with an array of new props in their book bags and terms in their brains to help them tackle their maths homework.

Number lines and number grids have replaced counting on your hands, and perplexing terms like chunking and partitioning represent the new ways of tackling arithmetic in English and Welsh schools.

"Many parents talk about how they try to help their child with their homework and their child says: 'No, no. That's not the way we do it at school,'" says Rob Eastaway, co-author of Maths for Mums and Dads and a former president of the Mathematical Association.

"It's not that parents don't want to engage, but the language of the new methods can be intimidating."

He adds: "There are something like five or six techniques at the heart of arithmetic but it can sound really daunting. And the stuff that teachers send home to parents can look a bit like a management consultancy diagram."

But parents are a key factor in whether children succeed, particularly in the early years, when research suggests their influence outweighs that of schools.

Nick Dowrick, director of Every Child Counts, which helps struggling pupils in 2,000 schools, says it is vital that parents understand the methods that are being used in school.

When it offers support to struggling pupils, it urges parents to come in and watch the one-to-one coaching lessons it gives so they understand how things are done.

This sort of approach can work better than school hall events, which can be uncomfortable for parents, says Mr Eastaway.

He says: "Adults can be really hard to reach. They're afraid they will turn up and the teacher will put them on the spot."

Instead he runs sessions in which children take part in fun games and mind reading tricks in class, while the parents sit back and observe without being seen.

But why has maths teaching changed?

The president of the National Association of Mathematics Advisers, Lynn Churchman, says like most of her generation, she was taught maths in a "very didactic way".

"It's as if they cut off my head and poured knowledge in then stuck it back on again.

"The problem with this is that when they get to the point where their heads are filled up - they can start to struggle because they're not getting that conceptual understanding," she adds.

Mr Eastaway says old methods of multiplication and division are "a bit like a black box - you put a number in and you get another number out."

With methods like chunking and partitioning, children get to understand what is going on.

As Ms Churchman explains, modern maths teaching focuses on the key concepts, and a renewed emphasis on mental methods and strategies as opposed to recall.


"When you are parents, as adults you have been doing maths for a long time and you have your own experiences and your own already established knowledge that has been inculcated at an early age - it's almost instinctive," she says.

"What you've got to do, and this is where it's hard for parents, is lift yourself out of your own mindset about how you did it and not be worried when your six-year-old can't instinctively tell you what 17 and six is."

She explains that a lot of expectations about what children should be able to do at maths has come down in age range - so they need these new methods to help them understand quite demanding concepts.

She continues: "I think that means that parents have to try to imagine the children developing methods and strategies based on picturing something in their heads."

The methods are actually quite easy, she says, but what can be tricky is changing the parents' attitudes towards them.

And just a few years before the first children to learn by these methods are about to go on and become parents themselves, it seems that ministers could be about to turn back the clock in primary schools.

Schools Minister Nick Gibb has stated publicly that he favours the older methods that he himself was taught by, and that he believes it is not an issue if children do not understand why they work.


Ms Churchman says: "Mr Gibb believes that you can teach standard traditional algorithms and rules, and that it doesn't matter that children don't understand the concepts behind it.

"If he drives through changes backed by that philosophy, that could set primary maths achievement back years."

Mr Eastaway also says there are significant risks associated with returning to the old methods, as many children just "didn't get them".

The Department for Education did not wish to comment on the concerns, saying its curriculum review due shortly would set out its plans for mathematics and other subjects.

Currently four out of five children are reaching the level expected of them at the end of primary school, and a third of 11-year-olds are reaching the standard expected of a 13-year-old.

But Ms Churchman says: "We are now ready for the next step change to make sure all children reach the levels expected of them."

    Although bought up on very traditional maths - to a level sufficient for a science degree - having seen the video I realised that for mental arithmetic/estimates I have been using these methods naturally

    Gridding and chunking can only work if the basics are understood, and if the basics are understood then gridding and chunking are superfluous.

    I was Numeracy Co-ordinator in a junior school during the early years of the Numeracy Strategy and led parent sessions for each year group to lead them through the methods. Parents were, on the whole, very receptive and grateful. Parents who ignored this and taught their children what they knew really confused them. These methods teach UNDERSTANDING, not just means to an end, which is the point.

    The grid method is really a more intuitive representation of traditional long multiplication. Perhaps not a substitute for traditional methods, but a nice way of describing what's going on.

    I went to a session for parents to help them understand the new maths teaching methods. I sat through it thinking it was overly convoluted. They then gave the parents problems to solve. I was the only one on a table of 6 who could do the problems in my head. The others all commented that if they had been taught this way they might understand maths much better. That is the value of the system

    Why does it have to be an either/or? One method is never going to suit everyone or every situation. I find gridding and chunking are best for 2 or 3 digit numbers because you can do them totally in your head with enough practice - useful if you're splitting a dinner bill between 17 people! Long division and multiplication need a piece of paper, but are useful for harder problems.

    Well, well, well. Grids and chunking are exactly the methods I worked out myself to handle awkward numbers in my head years ago. I was scared off maths as a child by the way it seemed to make no sense at all (despite reasonably good numerical reasoning skills - make sense of that one) and as far as I'm concerned anything that helps kids understand it can only be a good thing.

    The biggest advantage a child can have is the involvement of their parents in their education and development. That's why profiles of scholastic achievement so closely reflect the social classes of parents and why real social mobility is so hard to achieve.
    Anything which gives parents yet another excuse for not involving themselves in their children's education is to be deplored.

    All arithmetic is so basic I consider it all "adding up"....

    But what did you think of it when you were eight, or were you a born mathematical genius?

    Nearly every pupil at primary school has to be taught how to work with numbers; and the best way to do that is with the simplest method. Grids and chunking are not the simplest methods.

    How to multiply say 4.657 x 100. Answer. Simply move the decimal point 2 places to the right. Sorry WRONG. We are not allowed to move decimal points any more. Numbers only I'm afraid. (such is life!)

    I wasn't taught the grid or chunk methods at school but I've just been given a name for what I've been doing for as long as I can remember.

    These are just tools and any sensible tools will do - use whatever works. The issue is attitudinal - so many people are put off maths as children. One problem is disinterested parents and another is the boringly repetitive maths curriculum.

    My parents didn't teach me anything, and not just about maths. I now have a masters degree in mathematics. Everyone is responsible for their own plight, or they used to be anyway. Stop blaming everyone who isn't you and get on with whatever situation you are in.

    I have no objection in principle to whatever methods are used however I need to know about them so I can properly support my daughter's learning and homework.

    It may be EASIER to use a calculator but doing maths helps stimulate and develop a growing brain. Easier is NOT always better.

    Good arithmetic is generally important in banking and finance; i.e. scumbag institutions that got society into this mess in the first place.
    Engineering disciplines, that will hopefully get us back out; requires problem solving skills, and these generally have foundations in mathematical theories such as trigonometry and calculus. As for the arithmetic; it's easier to use a calculator!

    @25 are you trolling? Trigonometry and calculus are in my opinion the most important aspects of mathematics to be learnt. All arithmetic is so basic I consider it all "adding up", an 8 year old should be able to do it all. What would you have kids learn beyond the absolute basics? People could add up over 2000 years ago, would you like mankind to progress or continue scrabbling around in dirt?

    I remember learning the chunking method at school back in the 90s, although we didn't call it that, we just called it "long division" - which did lead to some confusion with my parents assuming it'd be like algorithmic LD!

    I think I prefer chunking - it's slower, but it's a lot more intuitive than algorithmic LD. Hard to say: I was good enough at maths to not need my parents' help much.

    The grid method in the video made sense. I can see how it would help to explain multiplications. Of course, I would expect such a crutch to be quickly discarded once basic concepts have been mastered.

    "Chunking" was problematic as there was no explanation of what "chunk" sizes should be chosen. Without clear guidelines or heuristics, this approach (as presented) is just confusing. Poor students.

    I am not a parent (yet). I also have no idea about these new-fangled mathematical techniques.

    But surely this is a perfect opportunity to help your kids and even bond with them? "Teach me what you learned today in school" - would help their confidence as well I suspect.

    After all, it's only maths: Us oldies could figure out the same problem the 'old way' and then compare answers?

    The Victorians were responsible for some pretty impressive structures and machinery. The calculations involved were (presumably) achieved without the latest apple mac or modern maths methods. How on earth did they cope?

    Went to "Curriculum Evening" at daughter's school in Yr4 & despite 2 A Levels each in maths both me & other half found new methods baffling. Despite protest, taught daughter old methods & like older brother she now finds Maths "easy". Without basic arithmetic skills, the joys of mathematics are hidden & the road into science, engineering etc, is made harder
