Thousands 'persistently truant', figures show

Government figures show around 400,000 pupils have been consistently absent from schools in England in the past year.

Each child missed about one month of school.

Schools Minister Nick Gibb said he was very concerned about children who persistently missed school.

He said children from poorer backgrounds were also more likely to be absent.
