Do conflicts provide opportunities for insurers?

2 September 2014 Last updated at 11:57 BST

Have recent conflicts provided an opportunity, or a threat, to insurers?

Bronek Masojada, chief executive of the insurance company Hiscox, told the Today programme's Justin Rowlatt that "in the short term volatility can be good, it can also be bad."

He said that insurers had taken losses on Malaysia Airlines' Flight MH17, shot down over Ukraine, and $500m specifically after aircraft were destroyed during the attack on Tripoli International Airport, both of which occurred in July this year.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 2 September.
