(Close): The Dow Jones broke through the 17,000 mark for the first time after strong new jobs figures.

The Dow Jones closed up 92.02 points or 0.54% at 17,068.26 after figures showed the US economy added 288,000 jobs last month.

The figure was higher than analysts' expectations, and the unemployment rate also dropped to 6.1%.

The S&P 500 index rose 10.82 points or 0.55% to 1,985.44. The Nasdaq climbed 28.19 points or 0.63% to 4,485.93.

In addition to the strong figure for June, jobs figures for May and April were also revised upwards.

"It's an extremely bullish report... I don't think you could have asked for a stronger read," Jacob Oubina, senior US economist at RBC Capital Markets in New York, told Reuters.
