(Close): Bed Bath & Beyond was the biggest loser among shares on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

The retailer reported quarterly sales and profits that fell short of analysts' expectations.

Shares in Alcoa rose 2.7% after the aluminium producer announced plans to buy Firth Rixon, a maker of parts for the aerospace industry.

Overall the Nasdaq was down 0.7%. There were more modest falls for the Dow Jones and S&P 500 which both fell 0.1%.

Analysts are not overly concerned about recent falls.

"I fully expect to see a hiccup here, but I wouldn't get too worried about it,'' he said. "It's probably going to set us up for a nice end-of-the-year rally,'' said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors.

Shares in video camera maker GoPro jumped 30% in the first day of trading.

The company raised $427m in its share sale.

GoPro cameras are used by skydivers, skiers and surfers to record their stunts.

As for the economy, figures from the Commerce Department showed consumer spending increased by 0.2% last month, below forecasts of a 0.4% rise.

Consumer spending is a closely-watched indicator for the US economy as it accounts for more than two-thirds of economic activity.
