(Close): US stock markets closed slightly higher on Thursday, with a fifth straight gain for the S&P index.

The S&P 500 hit another record, closing up 2.5 points, or 0.13%, at 1,959.48 while the the Dow Jones rose 14.84 points, or 0.09%, to 16,921.46.

However the tech-heavy Nasdaq dipped 3.5 points, or 0.08%, at 4,359.33.

That was despite Blackberry, which trades on the Nasdaq, jumping more than 9%, after the troubled smartphone maker reported a surprise profit.

Among the biggest losers was furniture retailer Pier 1 Imports, which fell 13%% after cutting its full-year earnings forecast.

Net profit for the three months to the end of March was $23m (£14m), compared with an $84m loss a year earlier. Revenue was down 69% at $966m.

In economic news, the Labor Department said weekly applications for unemployment benefit had fallen by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 312,000.

This means, in effect, that fewer people were laid off than in the previous week.
