(Close): Shares fell back from record levels because of a weaker forecast for global growth and concerns about airline profits.

Delta Airlines fell 2.89% and Boeing fell 2.3% after Germany's Lufthansa issued a profits warning.

The Dow Jones fell 0.6% to 16,843.88, and the S&P 500 fell 0.4% to 1,943.89. The Nasdaq fell 0.1% to 4,331.93.

Apple and Starbucks were slightly down after the European Commission began an investigation into their tax affairs.

The Commission said it had opened three in-depth investigations into tax decisions affecting Apple, Starbucks and Fiat Finance and Trade in Ireland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

JPMorgan fell 1.09% after chief financial officer Marianne Lake affirmed the investment bank's earlier statements that second-quarter capital markets revenue would probably be down about 20% from a year earlier.

Eli Lilly shares dropped 0.47% after it said its recently-approved stomach cancer drug Cyramza failed to prolong the lives of patients with advanced liver cancer in a late-stage trial.
