EU push to end zigzag flight paths

The European Commission is threatening EU member states with legal action if they do not take steps to implement a more centralised air traffic control system.
Flights are currently managed by 27 national bodies and during busy periods they often divert planes outside their airspace. The EC suggests inefficiencies in the system add 42km (26 miles) to the average flight.
