Some shoppers explain why they are changing their buying habits

More than half of UK consumers have changed their shopping habits as a result of the horsemeat scandal, a consumer group survey suggests.

The survey by Which? found that 60% of 2,000 adults questioned online had changed how they shop, with many now buying less processed meat.

It also suggested that public trust in the food industry had declined.

Horsemeat has been found in a number of processed beef products across Europe, raising questions about the food chain.

"The horsemeat scandal exposed the need for urgent changes to the way food fraud is detected and standards are enforced," said Which? executive director Richard Lloyd.

Some 68% of those surveyed do not think the government has been giving enough attention to enforcing labelling laws, with half of consumers not confident ingredient information is accurate.

"These serious failings must be put right if consumers are to feel fully confident in the food they are buying once more," Mr Lloyd said.

The scandal began in January when Irish food inspectors announced that they had found horsemeat in frozen beef burgers made by firms in Ireland and the UK, and sold by a number of UK supermarket chains, including Tesco, Iceland, Aldi and Lidl.

Since then beef products containing horsemeat have been found in a number of European countries, including France, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron told Parliamentary select committee chairmen and women on Tuesday that the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the government and retailers all had lessons to learn.

    What this whole scandal has highlighted is just how convoluted the supply chain can be. Supermarket says "It's not our fault we get the product from X". X says "But we get the meat from Y". Y says "Ah but we source that meat from Z" and so it goes on.

    Do you really want to be eating meat that has been transported for weeks from country to country and has traveled more miles than Judith Chalmers?

    Whilst I agree to support local producers, how do you suggest anyone disabled who hasn't got access to personal transport and with limited resources go about the best quality food essential for their health without having to increase their cost on obtaining the goods. I'm struggling to feed myself healthy on a budget, even a vegetarian diet. I no longer trust labels on packaging, including fish.

    Recalling the comment by one supermarket that they will 'change their sourcing of chicken to UK only' makes one wonder what skeletons that one has in the cupboard. Deeply suspicious of this convenient way to shop.

    Trying to make my local butcher my best mate, though so is everyone else!

    You get what you pay for.

    That said horse meat is very tender and tasty and should be considered for the table in the UK. Why is a horse so different from a sheep, pig or chicken? Come on people go out, visit farms and embrace your inner animal with canines and enjoy that the animal has life because we eat it.

    In other news, Tesco have now bought out a restaurant chain with an original company founder making the comment that, "This move will allow us to introduce Giraffe to a wider audience..."

    As long as the food is labelled properly customers can choose to eat what they want. If horse meat has been through the proper health checks there is nothing wrong with eating it. Horse meat is meat. Better the food contains this than fat and rusk and e numbers. Give the public the choice of eating it..

    That's nothing. How about companies which receive green, obsolete spoiled products back from the supermarkets, and turn them into new sausages, hams, etc.?

    I wasn't affected by the horse meat scandal. But then again being vegetarian, I know there is a limit on how much you can do to a mushroom.....or a bean.......or lettuce.....

    I see a lot of posters here claim to shop locally and use their local butchers. All very "Good Life".
    Seeing as 2 butchers on my high street have gone out of business in the last couple of years, I remain sceptical that everyone here is truly being honest about their shopping habits.

    Just a few too many self righteous posters on this thread for my liking.

    I have been wary for many years, ever since my father was adamant that his frozen roast "beef" slices in gravy where, in fact, horse meat. He had eaten horse meat in France during the war, so he would know the difference. Thing is, we had our conversations about his ready-meals TWENTY years ago!

    Food fraud has existed since time began. And sensible people have always been wary and inquisitive in response. All commercial enterprises exist only to make money. "What you can get away with" is the limit of their morality. But even sensible consumers can only 'vote' when there is choice. In a dystopian future there will be no shops and only one supermarket, with extortionate prices. Wake up!

    I was brought up on home cooked fresh food on a low budget and learnt to cook. When I worked long hours, I tried ready meals and processed food but couldn't find one that tasted the same, and never have. So continued to cook my own fresh. With a freezer, you can cook cheaply and quickly , store excess, and know exactly what your and your family are eating.

    Oh come on. An On-line survey, of 2000 people. Well that's a truly representative section of society. The only story here is that WHICH? need to go and take a course in Statistics before publishing such rubbish. and BBC should no better too.

    I can't believe how many people depend on ready made meals.What is it that people don't want to use fresh produce anymore for their meals? Most ready made meals look and taste not only horrible they are expensive as well. Stop complaining and take control of what you are eating! Mind and body will thank you for that !
