The combined company will have 25 million customers in 14 countries, and will likely prove to be a powerful rival to Rupert Murdoch in the UK pay TV market.

Speaking to the Today programme, Nick Thomas, an analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media - said: "With this deal Liberty Global has become, by some definitions, the largest cable operator in the world."

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme on Wednesday 6 February 2013.
